Feeding the Beast

Thursday, October, 9, 2008

About a year ago, I gave up salting and sweetening. For an entire month, my baked potatoes were bland and my tea tasted soapy. Then, out of nowhere, I stopped missing the salt and the sugar. After I cut myself off from the bad stuff, I finally quit missing it.

When I fell off the wagon, my first experiences with sugary and salty things were particularly unpleasant. I had quit wanting the flavors, and they didn’t taste as good as they used to. However, the more I gave in, the more I found myself wanting their tastes in my mouth until my cravings were once again full-blown.

I love the expression, “Don’t feed the Beast.” I can be quite the obsesser, so I have endless opportunities to apply it to my life. One of my “beasts” is junk food, but as of late, various events have all but squashed my appetite... so I’ve been eating the bare minimum of healthy things to keep myself going. (If you’re only eating once a day, you might as well eat fruit in leau of gummy bears, savvy?)

Foolishly, I thought my beast was conquered, when in reality, it was sleeping. I’ve munched on potato chips, cookies and cake every night for the past five days, and now I’m starving for something sinful! That’s the problem about feeding the Beast... the more you give it, the hungrier it gets ;)

and I can totally relate. Last year, I gave up coffee for Lent and, by the end of it, I didn't even want it anymore. Of course, the same that happened to you happened to me...I started drinking it again - even though it tasted gross - and now I can't stop. Addictions are sickening.
