Raise your hand if you remember/can sing along with the Saved By the Bell gang for this poignant little ditty about the meaning of true-blue friendship?
Hokey? Why, of course it is. But, true? Undoubtedly so!
I was home and in the company of a group of my best friends from college this weekend. Dress me in neon bike shorts, crimp my hair and picture me right alongside Jessie Spano, Kelly Kapowski and Lisa Turtle; this is the song I wanted to sing as I drove home from our ‘Girls’ Night In.’
Gathering from five different cities, we were delighted to be together. We talked and talked and talked. We laughed as we recounted memories from the good ole days. We cried as we shared in the heartache of loss and love. We were serious. We were silly. We were tired, realizing our conversation had led us into the wee morning hours and waaaay past our bedtimes.
It is a rare and beautiful thing to be with such high-caliber friends. It is a gift. If you don’t believe me, check the numbers. Sex and the City grossed over 300 million dollars in box office sales in just a little over a month. Undoubtedly, high-fashion-clad women across the world linked arms with their best of friends to see the movie a movie that perpetuates the idea that as women, we depend on each other to survive.
“If you're down,/I'll pick you up/I'll never let you fall/If you ever need someone/I'm waiting for your call/We'll be friends forever/We'll be friends/Talkin' bout friends/Always will be there/Will be there. Will be there.”
