Gary Diggs is the Mannequin House Owner
By giornalista, Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 1 commentsNearly twenty years in the spotlight have earned Jackée neighborhood-celebrity status. Always dressed immaculately, Jackée is showered with cards and gifts every holiday. Jackée is a mannequin, and she resides in the front window of hair salon owner, Gary Diggs. Purchased at Eastwood Mall, Gary moved her to Vestavia in 1999 and haphazardly placed her in the hallway of his 50s-style house. When pulling out of the driveway, he noticed her in the window, where she remains, attracting the attention of passersby who often slow to admire her latest ensemble. In May, he drapes her with a Vestavia High cap and gown. Every June, she wears a wedding gown. She’s even worn the “official peach colored dress” of a local dance team for a special recital. “I didn’t know the magnitude of it,” Gary says, “until people started telling me that they give directions via my house. I guess it’s kind of loosened up the neighborhood.”
What’s your favorite thing about reading skirt!?It’s informative and fun.
What’s the best thing about wearing a skirt? I'm so hot-natured; the extra ventilation is always a plus.
Extra Web Content:
“I walked in the house and placed her there [in the window], not thinking, so she wouldn’t get knocked over while everyone was moving stuff in,” Gary remembers. “I went to take the UHAUL back, and as I pulled out of the driveway, I was like, ‘Oh my God. Come here you. You got to look at that.’ And it was like, ‘Oh, let’s leave her.’”
Gary and his roommate then began changing her clothes based on their moods or the season. The neighborhood started to notice when Gary neglected to switch Miss Jackée’s ensembles. “I got a note in the mailbox saying, ‘What’s wrong with you, Miss Mannequin?’” Gary says. “We just played around and would have fun with it, and didn’t really realize that people were watching.”
It wasn’t long before people started writing her letters. In May, she gets graduation cards. In June, it’s congratulatory wedding cards. “She’s always getting married,” Gary says. “I guess it just doesn’t work out for her, so every year she tries again. Eighty percent of marriages don’t work out, and it’s her. Little do [people] know that she’s racking up the statistics.”
I couldn’t resist. Here’s a picture of me with Jackee.
